IFCC Announces the Winners of the 2011 IFCC Awards
Milan, 12th April 2011 - IFCC, the leading organization in the field of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine worldwide, today announced the names of the winners of the seven 2011 IFCC Awards.
Professor Ulf-Håkan STENMAN, Dept. of Clinical Chemistry, Helsinki University, Finland, is the winner of the 2011 IFCC Distinguished Clinical Chemist Award, sponsored by Beckman Coulter. This award recognizes specifically an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the science of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine or the application of Clinical Chemistry to the understanding or the solution of medical problems.
Dr Carl BURTIS, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, United States, is the winner of the 2011 IFCC Henry Wishinsky Award for Distinguished International Services. This award, sponsored by Siemens, recognizes specifically an individual who has made unique contributions to the promotion and understanding of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine throughout the world.
Doctor Mary BURRITT, Laboratory Medicine and Pathology, Mayo Clinic, Arizona, United States, is the winner of the 2011 IFCC Award for Distinguished Contributions in Education. This award, sponsored by Abbott Diagnostics, recognizes specifically an individual who has made extraordinary contributions in establishing and developing educational materials for the Clinical Chemistry discipline to improve training and educational programs worldwide or in a region.
Professor Michael NEUMAIER, University Medicine, Mannheim Institute for Clinical Chemistry, Mannheim, Germany is the winner of the 2011 IFCC Award for Significant Contributions in Molecular Diagnostics. This award, sponsored by Abbott Molecular, recognizes specifically an individual who has made unique contributions to the promotion and understanding of molecular biology and its applications in ClinicalChemistry and Laboratory Medicine worldwide.
Professor Ronald A. J. WANDERS, Academic Medical Center, University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, is the winner of the 2011 IFCC Distinguished Award for Laboratory Medicine and Patient Care. This award, sponsored by IFCC, recognizes specifically an individual who has made unique contributions in Laboratory Medicine, its application in improving patient care, and having a worldwide impact in clinical medicine.
Professor Linda THIENPONT, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Ghent University, Belgium, is the winner of the 2011 IFCC-Robert Schaffer Award for Outstanding Achievements in the Development of Standards for Use in Laboratory Medicine. This award, co-sponsored by NIST and CLSI, recognizes specifically an individual who has made outstanding and unique contributions to the advancement of reference methods and/or reference materials for laboratory medicine to facilitate improved quality of clinical diagnostics and therapies, which would in turn lead to reduced costs and improved patient care.
Professor Rossa CHIU, Department of Clinical Pathology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, China, is the winner of the 2011 IFCC Young Investigator Award, sponsored by Roche. This award recognizes and encourages the academic and professional development of a young investigator (under 40 years of age) who has demonstrated exceptional scientific achievements in Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine in his/her career.

Prof. Chris Lam, Chairman IFCC Awards Committee, said: “We are delighted in electing these colleagues for the 2011 IFCC Awards. It hasn’t been an easy choice because all the nominations we received were of extraordinary high value. It has been a privilege considering them and all the other international nominees for these awards. We are sure that they will inspire a new generation of clinician-scientists worldwide”.
The Awards will be conferred in Berlin on Sunday 15th May in the Opening Ceremony of the 21st IFCC International Congress in Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine, to be held in Berlin from 15th to 19th May 2011.
